Latest report from London hospitals about Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans (BXO).
Lichen Sclerosus (BXO) is a skin condition that causes itchy, scally white patches on the male genitalia.
This report is for children under 16-year-old. BXO is not common condition in children. It is more common in adults. This report showed the correlation between clinical diagnosis and biopsy results. They reviewed results of children undergoing circumcision with BXO.
This is a 10-year review (2007–2017) of all children aged under 16. Children had circumcision at a tertiary teaching hospital, London. Incidence of BXO in children was 8.9% (91/1025 children). Most common scarring occurred on foreskin. On operation authors reported that involvement was found in foreskin alone (26.4%), foreskin and meatus (47.2%), and foreskin, meatus, and glans (26.4%). Before circumcision 24.2% of patients were advised steroid cream. All children showed confirmation of BXO on histology report.
This study has concluded that urologists can diagnosed BXO with a high degree of accuracy (>90%). Wee hole involvement is more common than previously described in the medical literature. Children can have recurrent signs of BXO 1 year following circumcision, and long-term follow-up is essential.
