Newborn circumcision is a quick and safe procedure that removes the foreskin. The ideal age of newborn circumcision is within 1-8 weeks of life. At London Circumcision Centre, we specialise in baby circumcision using the Circumplast ring, a modern method known for fast healing, a few complications, and the best results.
All procedures are carried out by Dr A. R. Khan, a Pediatric Surgeon/Urologist with over 30 years of experience, and Dr A. Safdar, a former professor of Pediatric Surgery.
If you are considering newborn circumcision in London or Cambridge, our clinic offers a pre-operation consultation, direct access to senior surgeons, and aftercare throughout the process.
Reasons for Newborn Circumcision
Parents choose baby circumcision for religious, cultural, personal or rarely medical reasons.
At the London Circumcision Centre, we provide thorough assessments and ensure that every procedure is conducted with specialist consultation and informed consent from both parents.
Common Reasons Include:
- Religious Practice: Circumcision is an important tradition in Islam and Judaism, usually performed on the eighth day after birth.
- Cultural Beliefs: In many communities, circumcision is a family or cultural norm passed down through generations.
- Hygiene & Prevention: Studies suggest circumcision may lower the risk of urinary infection in the first year of life.
- Medical Need: Circumcision is medically necessary in specific urinary tract abnormalities.
Our surgeons, Dr. Khan and Dr. Safdar, ensure each case is individually assessed before the circumcision to ensure that it is safe and appropriate to perform.
Before Your Baby’s Circumcision
Before performing a newborn circumcision, every baby is carefully assessed by our experienced doctors, Dr. A R Khan (30+ years’ experience) or Dr. Safdar (former Professor of Paediatric Surgery). This ensures your child is healthy, suitable for the circumcision, and that any medical concerns are identified in advance.
If a baby is not fit for circumcision due to medical reasons, we provide a formal referral to a Specialist Paediatric Urology Department via your GP.
For children under 16, both parents must attend to give written consent. If one parent cannot be present, please get in touch with us beforehand to discuss your situation.
Circumcision will not be performed without both parents’ consent.
Circumcision Method
We use the Ring Method for baby circumcision, primarily the Circumplast device, which we have specialised in since 2013. It is our preferred choice over Plastibell due to its fewer complications and outcomes.
The Circumplast ring is designed to:
- Prevent migration to the shaft.
- Protect the glans.
- Leave less inner skin, resulting in a tidier, more neat appearance.
The ring is placed around the foreskin and tied securely. It stays in place to stop bleeding and naturally separates within 3 to 14 days. This method is quick, low-risk, and minimally invasive, making it highly suitable for newborns.
We also have experience with other methods, including Gomco clamp, Mogen clamp, Alisklamp, stitch and glue, but Circumplast remains the safest and most effective for babies.
Procedure
The circumcision procedure typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and is carried out by Dr. (Mr.) Khan or Dr. Safdar, both experienced paediatric surgeons.
We use local anaesthesia to numb the foreskin, ensuring the baby feels no pain during the circumcision.
Most babies remain calm or asleep throughout. The Circumplast ring is applied, and the foreskin is removed. The ring stays in place to control bleeding and will fall off naturally within 3 to 14 days.
Parents receive a complete aftercare package during the visit, including what to expect immediately after the procedure and how to care for the baby at home.
Best Age for Newborn Circumcision
The best age for newborn circumcision is between 3 days and 8 weeks old. At this stage, babies heal faster, experience fewer complications, and the procedure is more straightforward.
Our audit shows the lowest complication rate in babies under 1 month. After 2 months, babies become more active, making healing slightly longer and increasing the risk of pain and complications.
We recommend booking early to ensure the circumcision is done within this ideal age.
Aftercare
After circumcision, we provide 24/7 aftercare from our doctors—Dr. Khan or Dr. Safdar—for peace of mind.
Each family receives a free aftercare instruction by email, medicated honey (Activon) and advice for pain relief.
Healing Process:
- Mild swelling is normal and settles in a few days.
- The ring falls off naturally within 3 to 14 days (average 7 days).
- The head of the penis remains exposed and should be kept clean.
Daily Care Tips:
- Bathe daily with 1–2 tablespoons of salt in warm water.
- Gently clean with water if soiled.
- Apply Vaseline with each nappy change to prevent sticking.
- Use Paracetamol for the first 48 hours. Ibuprofen is suitable for babies over 3 months.
Free follow-up support is available during the first 4 weeks, including appointments if needed.

Risks of Newborn Circumcision
Circumcision is a safe and quick procedure when performed by experienced surgeons. However, like all surgical procedures, it carries some risks:
- Bleeding – Usually minor and easily controlled. Rarely admitted to the hospital.
- Infection – Sometimes it may be infected and typically managed with antibiotics.
- Too much or too little skin removed – Rarely, but may require revision.
- Ring-related issues – The ring may delay falling off or migrate if not monitored. Parents should follow the aftercare instructions carefully.
- Buried penis – More common in babies with excess fat around the penis; may need additional care for 3 – 6 months or correction later.
Please contact us immediately if you encounter any issues.
- Temperature greater than 37 °C
- Excessive bleeding
- Extreme irritability/inconsolability
- Difficulty passing urine
- Signs of infection
