Circumcision Revision is a surgical procedure to remove additional foreskin tissue and/or scar tissue after a previous circumcision, and to improve problems such as scarring, uneven results, skin bridges, stitch tunnels, stitch marks, excess loose skin, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome.
Our surgeons have 30 years’ experience in circumcision revision. Please read the information below about problems, the procedure and aftercare before undergoing revision or redo circumcision.
What is Circumcision Revision?
Circumcision Revision is performed to correct a previously scarred or unsatisfactory circumcision.
- Anaesthesia: Usually performed under local anaesthesia. In some cases, general anaesthesia may be used in hospital.
- Procedure Time: Typically 45–60 minutes.
- What you may feel afterwards: Discomfort and swelling can occur and should settle within a few days.
- Aftercare: Following the aftercare instructions is important to help minimise complications.
Patient feedback: We have excellent feedback from previous patients.
Who may benefit from Circumcision Revision?
Men commonly consider circumcision revision due to:
- Loose circumcision (extra foreskin remaining after a previous circumcision)
- Asymmetrical skin or scar (uneven or raised scarring causing discomfort)
- Skin bridges (penile skin bridges developing during healing and restricting movement or bending)
- Excessive scar tissue (where removal of all scar tissue may require a complete revision)
Functional problems (a tight scar can occur and may lead to loss of erection during sexual activity)
What happens during the procedure?
Before the procedure, local anaesthesia is given to ensure you do not feel pain or discomfort during surgery.
The urologist then makes incisions to remove excess tissue and create a more aesthetically pleasing result. The previous circumcision scar may be surgically removed, and the wound is closed with glue.
After the procedure is complete, aftercare instructions are emailed to you.
Consultation and surgery usually happen on the same day.
Aftercare at Home
A dressing is applied after the procedure.
Aftercare includes:
- Keeping the area clean and dry
- Wearing light clothing
- Taking Vitamin C
- Applying Bio-Oil and Mederma gel for scar reduction
If necessary, follow-up appointments can be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure there are no complications.
What to watch for at home
Monitor for signs of infection and contact the medical team if you experience:
- Temperature
- Increased redness
- Throbbing
- Drainage
Recovery Timeline
Recovery is generally straightforward, and circumcision revision is usually a successful procedure. Some discomfort is expected for a few days, and pain relief is available.
- First few days: Discomfort and swelling may occur
- 10–15 days: Complete healing typically takes 10–15 days
- Up to 15 days: Swelling and bruising may occur and should gradually subside within 15 days
- Work: A minimum of one week off work is recommended, and you can usually return when comfortable
- Sex and exercise: Avoid sexual activity and physical exercise for at least 4 weeks
The urologist will guide you on whether you would benefit from circumcision revision.
