Stapler circumcision is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the foreskin using an advanced circular disposable stapler device.
At the London and Cambridge Circumcision Centre, we use the CircCurer (LangHe) or ZSR stapler device — a modern machine designed to perform safe and precise circumcision under local anaesthesia.
Since 2019, we have been the first private clinic in London to offer this innovative technique.
All procedures are carried out by Dr A. R. Khan, a GMC Specialist Paediatric Surgeon/Urologist with over 30 years of experience, and trained in stapler circumcision.
What Is Stapler Circumcision?
Stapler circumcision uses a single-use, circular device that cuts and seals the foreskin with metallic staplers simultaneously.
Staplers come off within 2-3 weeks.
This eliminates the need for traditional sutures and reduces tissue handling. The operation typically takes 10–15 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia.
In many adults, the procedure is combined with frenuloplasty by dissolvable stitches, depending on the tightness of the frenulum.
Why Choose Stapler Circumcision?
Compared with conventional cut-and-stitch circumcision, stapler circumcision offers several benefits:
- Quick procedure – usually completed within 10–15 minutes.
- Less bleeding – blood vessels are sealed during cutting.
- Better cosmetic outcome – more uniform wound edges and improved appearance.
- Reduced pain – minimal tissue trauma and shorter operative time.
- Lower infection risk – smaller wound area and reduced handling of tissue.
Clinical studies, including those published in Braz J Med Biol Res (2015), show that stapler circumcision is a safe and effective option for adult men.
Cost and Consultation
The cost of adult stapler circumcision using the CircCurer (LangHe) or ZSR device is £780, which includes:
- A same-day consultation
- The surgical procedure
- One free follow-up visit within 4 weeks
Before treatment, the surgeon will provide detailed information about the procedure and its possible outcomes to ensure informed consent.
It is important to understand that circumcision is irreversible and permanently exposes the head of the penis.
The Procedure
- Assessment and Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is injected at the base and shaft of the penis to ensure pain-free surgery.
- Device Placement: The bell of the stapler is inserted under the foreskin and positioned correctly.
- Cut and Seal: The foreskin is removed and sealed by staplers in one step.
- Inspection: The wound is checked for bleeding. Sometimes bleeding needs to be stopped with a few stitches
- Bandaging: A pressure dressing is applied to protect the wound.
In cases of BXO (Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans) or significant scarring, stapler circumcision may not be recommended. A consultant urologist will advise suitable alternatives, such as circumcision with glue or stitches.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients can go home shortly after the procedure. Recovery takes 4–6 weeks, slightly longer than with a circumcision with glue or stitch.
Post-operative guidance:
- Avoid swimming, heavy exercise, and sexual activity for 3–4 weeks.
- Keep the wound clean and dry for at least 3 days.
- Apply Fucidin cream to the wound and clean gently with antiseptic solution (e.g. Savlon) up to four times daily.
- Staples usually fall off within 3–5 weeks. If any remain after 4–5 weeks, they should be removed by a doctor.
- Vitamin C aids recovery, and once healed, Vitamin E cream, Bio-oil, or Mederma gel may help reduce scarring.
Night erections can cause mild discomfort; emptying the bladder before sleep and sleeping on the side or back can help. Wearing snug underwear prevents unnecessary movement.
Risks and Considerations
Although rare, the following complications may occur:
- Minor bleeding or bruising – usually settles within days.
- Infection – reduced by keeping the area clean and using the prescribed cream.
- Device malfunction – rarely requires manual completion of the circumcision.
- Retained staples – must be removed after 4–5 weeks if not detached naturally.
- Scarring or sensitivity – generally improves with time.
Full vs Partial Circumcision
Stapler circumcision is recommended for full circumcision, where both the inner and outer foreskin are removed, leaving the glans completely exposed.
It is not suitable for partial circumcision, which leaves residual foreskin covering part of the glans and may lead to future complications. Your urologist will advise on the best option for your condition.
When to Consider Stapler Circumcision
Stapler circumcision may be advised if you have:
- Phimosis or tight foreskin
- Recurrent infections (balanitis)
- Painful retraction or hygiene issues
- A preference for full circumcision
- Religious, cultural or personal reasons
If topical treatments such as steroid creams fail to treat a tight foreskin or you want a faster, less invasive solution, stapler circumcision may be appropriate.
Conclusion
Stapler circumcision using the CircCurer (LangHe) or ZSR device provides a modern, precise, and efficient approach for adult circumcision. It offers shorter procedure times, cleaner results, and reliable healing under the care of experienced urologists.
Proper aftercare to follow is essential for a smooth recovery and the best outcome.
